چکیده

The Aggregate Level Simulation Protocol (ALSP) resulted from a U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) effort to identify mechanisms suitable to facilitate the integration and interoperation of existing (so-called “legacy”) constructive training simulations. The Joint Training Confederation (JTC) – the primary application of ALSP – has evolved from two models in 1992 to twelve in 1997 and supports several largescale command post exercises (CPXs) each year, including the annual Ulchi Focus Lens, Prairie Warrior and Unified Endeavor exercises. Along with the Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) protocol efforts, the ALSP JTC serves as a key progenitor of the High Level Architecture (HLA). This paper highlights the testing approach used within the JTC and places it within the broader verification, validation and accreditation (VV&A) framework. The challenges presented by federation testing – some fundamental, others practical and programmatic – are

Management of the Joint Training Confederation Family of Specifications

The High Level Architecture (HLA) stipulates model specifications in the form of Federation Object Models (FOMs) and Simulation Object Models (SOMs). These specifications are constructed in accordance with the Object Model Template (OMT) and establish the "information model contract that is necessary (but not sufficient) to ensure interoperability among federates” [4]. Predating the definition ...

Advanced Distributed Simulation through the Aggregate Level Simulation Protocol

The venerable problem solving technique of simulation finds itself in the midst of a revolution. Where once it was regarded as a “technique of last resort” for systems analysis, today simulation is widely applied to support myriad purposes, including: training, interaction, visualization, hardware testing, and decision support in real-time. Advanced distributed simulation (ADS) is the U.S. Depa...

Zero Lookahead in a Distributed Time-Stepped Simulation

Conservative parallel and distributed synchronization mechanisms require a quantity known as lookahead to enable deadlock avoidance. Unfortunately, identifying sources of lookahead can be problematic when lookahead does not naturally exist in the speciied simulation model, often forcing model respeciication. The U.S. Defense Modeling and Simulation OOce (DMSO) is sponsoring the development of t...

Multi-Resolution Modeling in the JTLS-JCATS Federation

The JTLS-JCATS federation satisfies a warfighter requirement for multi-level training, as articulated in MSIAC’s Warfighter M&S Needs Assessment. In the process of developing the federation, the federation team has gained insight into Multi-Resolution Modeling (MRM) necessitated by federating two fundamentally different simulations. The Joint Theater Level Simulation (JTLS) is a hex-based, time...
